Visit an Island in Time...
Since 1962, when President John F Kennedy signed legislation creating the Point Reyes National Seashore, millions of visitors have come to explore this spectacular park. You can spot gray whales migrating past the Point Reyes Lighthouse, meet Tule Elk at Tomales Point, kayak in quiet lagoons, and explore secret tidepools and hidden sea caves. Within an hour's drive, you can also visit the towering redwoods of Muir Woods to the south, Bodega Bay to the north, and the Napa - Sonoma wine country to the east.
Along with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, over 100,000 acres of open space are preserved for future generations. Experience the 150 miles of hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding trails and the many pristine ocean and bay beaches that are perfect for long walks and relaxation.
Over 450 species of birds have been sighted throughout Point Reyes. The Audubon Canyon Ranch on Highway 1 north of Stinson Beach is an egret and heron sanctuary. The Point Reyes Bird Observatory in Bolinas is the only full time ornithological research station in the United States.
December through April over 30,000 gray whales pass by the Point Reyes Lighthouse on their southern then northern migrations while approximately 1,000 elephant seals take up residence and give birth to their pups at Chimney Rock. In the spring, wildflowers bloom profusely throughout the park.
